For most of us, going for medical treatment in the hospital is a depressing and joyless experience.
But for artist Karolyn Gehrig, she sees life differently. Currently she is undergoing treatment for a chronic disease called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS).
EDS is an inherited disorder that affects the body’s connective tissues in which the body can’t regenerate collagen. As a result, you will suffer frequent joint dislocations, organ rupture, and other issues.
Medical Patient Selfies Social Movement #hospitalglam
You can see three thousand over images of her and other patients in the solemn sterile hospital environment over at her Instagram.
According to Gehrig, she hopes that the hashtag will become a social movement, which can inspire other people suffering from chronic illnesses to share their experiences in treatment.
She told Buzzfeed that the act of taking the photos reasserts my agency over my body in a space that is otherwise uncertain. And sharing them transforms it into a way to normalize the experience of living with illness and hopefully lessens the stigma of taking care of herself.
As mentioned in her Instagram site, “#HospitalGlam is taking the shame out of being in treatment one selfie at a time.”
