Eric is holding one of several personalized scrapbooks his mother made for him and his cousins, which documents the life of their grandmother, Zera Greene. The gathering took place at the Greene homestead, which was one of the few homes left basically intact during the flood, described by many as the worst disaster to ever hit Watauga County. The house is also considered one of the oldest — if not the oldest — dwellings still habitable in the area today. Zera Greene and most of her relatives and neighbors survived the flood that claimed other homes, land and lives around them. Two individuals visiting the Greene home at the time of the flood were swept away by the raging waters, while another was saved by climbing a tree near the front porch. Six generations, to date, have lived in the year-old house. Some, too, recall the flood, and others have savored the stories passed down the line.

They come from all over the East Coast for grits, liver and onions, chicken-fried steak and other savory dishes at Granny Bee's Country Cooking restaurant on Route 17 in Glenns. There are some motorists from as far away as upstate New York who have been stopping by as they travel south at vacation time,'' says Ann Hollandsworth, the restaurant's co-owner. Hollandsworth is in a partnership with her sister, Velma June Henry. In fact, the restaurant is entirely a family affair, with Hollandsworth's mother Buelah Mullins, sisters Faye Mallinson and Janet Marshall, and niece Terry Fox, working in shifts during the 16 hours the restaurant is open. With the exception of Fox, who lives in Newport News, the rest of the women live in nearby communities on the Middle Peninsula. Granny Bee's is named for Mullins, who has been in the restaurant business for 40 years. Since the family business started two years ago, the year-old matriarch has reigned over the kitchen during the breakfast and lunch period. The restaurant opens at 5 a.
