I seek to express emotional experiences in their most raw form, without a literal or narrative setting. Frequently my pieces start abruptly as if the music has been going on for a while; there is no introduction, no development, just the most condensed version of the untransformed material. There is a dramatic quality to this approach.
How to Write Your Mission Statement

Musicians and performers tend to resist to putting their art into words. Often they say that their work speaks for itself. Afterall, if you want to make a living from your music then stands to reason that you must be able to sell your music. To bring your dream to life, it helps to have a mission statement — a one to two sentence piece of writing that concisely summarizes who you are, what you stand for, and what you intend to achieve as an artist and as a person. This is an opportunity to identify your uniqueness as a performer which, as we explained above, is a necessity in the industry today.
The Importance of a Mission Statement
Bryce Richardson is a recipient of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Contrary to widespread belief, I do not play oboe. I play the bassoon. A majestic, beautiful, unique bass double reed instrument with a sound like gold. I have been playing this instrument for almost seven years now and it has become a passion that I am more than excited to pursue throughout my college career and beyond. This instrument has also led me to find other interests in the wonderful world that is music and art as a whole. I originally played upright bass.
I see creating and experiencing music as a way to enhance a human connection in our lives. As we create music, it reveals so much about our human side — our loves, our dreams, our fears. Musical composition provides us a means to communicate these aspects of being human to those around us. The process requires a great deal of trust between the composer and the players, and between the musicians and the listeners. I believe the magic and power of music comes when it fulfills this trust and offers all of these participants a feeling of community. For example, the best concerts are measured by how connected you feel to the music and musicians on stage, and also to the other audience members after the performance. For me as an artist, jazz composition is an ideal medium of expression. Rooted firmly in a rich tradition, it also espouses a spirit of innovation. It is a music which embraces many styles and ideas of music.
